Presentation

Within the framework of contemporary analytical philosophy, all of my research touches on the joint fields of action, language and the mind. It mainly revolves around the question of what it means to understand someone.
My initial line of research concerns the development, within the philosophy of action and of the mind, of the views of Elizabeth Anscombe and Ludwig Wittgenstein, embodied in France by Vincent Descombes. This consists in demonstrating how logico-grammatical analysis makes it possible to clarify certain important metaphysical problems touching on the mind and on intentionality by tracing a path that departs from both phenomenology and naturalist Weltanschauung.
My second line of research aims to draw conclusions from the logico-conceptual contributions of the philosophy of action concerning the social sciences and the epistemological debates that run through them. The first part concerns la réalité du social (the reality of social issues), i.e. institutions’ modes of existence. I am examining the consequences of the idea that social conduct is conduct informed by (one or more) rule(s) rather than conduct directed towards others. The second part deals with le statut de la connaissance anthropologique et sa relation à la compréhension spontanée (the status of anthropological knowledge and its relationship to the spontaneous understanding) that social agents already possess as regards their practical worlds.
I am also interested in exegetical questions concerning the philosophy of Wittgenstein, informal logic, contemporary readings of Aristotle, the ethics of virtues, and problems associated with the interpretation of authors of ancient and  modern philosophy.

Main research themes: Philosophy of action and the mind; Authors: G.E.M. Anscombe, L. Wittgenstein; Philosophy/epistemology of social sciences
